Where do you WATCH your news?
Main Post:
Canadian here. I have just been watching the CBC National for their 45-1 hour segments on Youtube in the morning, however, I am craving a little bit more coverage sometimes. Mostly interested in American politics but I don't really want to start watching CNN or FOX since I know their reputation.
Can you guys recommend a balanced news group that I can WATCH on their website or Youtube? I don't like reading the news and prefer to see it on video and the producers have their segments laid out for the audience. Thanks!
Top Comment: I honestly don't. I strongly prefer articles to videos and hate the trend of news sites posting a 7 minute video that's just someone reading a 3 minute article to you.
LPT: Limit reading/watching the News to 20 minutes a day
Main Post:
I have been in a deep funk since the 2024 election. My anger and rage over the current political climate have affected my relationships, mental health and work. Limiting my news to 20 minutes a day (Never in the morning) has helped.

Stop reading/watching the news everyday.

Hey survivors. I want to suggest to everyone here as a fellow survivor of long-term abuse, that you disengage from the news and any social media updating you on the news. Select one or two specific times a week that you will get caught up. Hide your phone from yourself if you have to. If you need to disassociate find a show with a lot of episodes and watch it on your TV. If you have the energy get really into reading fiction.
We are under psychological and emotional attack. The way to deal with it is to disengage. I understand staying informed is important but there is nothing you need to know about on a daily/hourly basis. Your life is important. Your peace is important. Your health is important.
Your wellness is non-negotiable.
We need you to stay healthy for the long haul.
Top Comment: I’m about to do/try that. It’s not do easy because when I don’t know what’s going on I get fears too.
How are you reading the news?
Main Post:
Recently stopped spending time on all social media but Reddit and Substack, and all social media full stop on my phone. I am on the go a lot and rely on travel apps a lot, so I do have a smartphone. The only entertainment I use it for is reading books and playing Balatro. As a result, I'm kind of not up to speed with what's going on in the world. Which is nice. But I should probably know some of the things that are going on, especially if it's not in the format of the total digital overwhelm that comes with social media scrolling.
I thought about a physical paper, but so many of the papers here (UK) have significant political leanings I'm not interested in engaging with. I'd also honestly rather it were free.
I am also interested in reading the news on my phone as I prefer to travel light and not carry a bag, but I don't really want it to be in the form of a scrolling app - a daily email subscription where I can pick the topics and it just gives me the top stories from each one would be honestly ideal, but I'm not sure if such a thing exists.
How do you read the news, if you do read the news?
Top Comment: I feel like I see most of my news on Reddit. Your ideal news source is possible, though I only know of a source for US political news summaries. I know you said you're in the UK, so I don't know if it interests you at all. What the fuck just happened today .com https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com/
Can't stop watching news
Main Post:
Basically title. I normally turn a blind eye to news but so much is happening and I'm really upset by the new administration and really scared. My husband and I did a huge grocery order in anticipation of prices going up and decided to try to stay home and spend as little as possible. Then I saw that plane hit that neighborhood in Philly and catch homes on fire and it just kinda sent me over the edge. I feel like it's not safe anywhere and that soon I won't be able to afford to live. Idk if this is even the right place for this, but is anyone having problems like this? Any suggestions? I'm just compulsively watching. My anxiety is through the roof.
Edit: thanks to all for your kind words. I was so exhausted when I wrote this, I wanted to clarify not "watching"news in front of the TV all day, just online consumption on Reddit, trusted sites, some YouTubers I like, etc. I don't do social media (besides reddit) and a small FB bc my family communicates that way. I used to work in the news, nearly went crazy and would never turn it on in my home. That's why my behavior the last few days has been so troubling. I'm working today and also feeling better, less gloom and doom.Sending love and peace to all of you 🕊️ 💜
Top Comment: Take a deep breath and remember the bigger picture. We’re all here by chance and we have to just take one day at a time and focus on what’s in our control.
Does anyone under 40 actually watch the news anymore?
Main Post:
Genuinely curious. The only people I know that religiously watch the news are my boomer dad and stepmom and some of their boomer friends. My mom is Gen X and never watches the news. My brother is an older millennial and never watches the news.
I don’t. It’s just depressing and anxiety inducing anymore. I prefer reading about what is actually important instead of seeing how a woman tied a dog to the back of her van and drove away on purpose.

People who watch the news daily believe that we are increasingly living in insecure times, when in fact it is the opposite.

Top Comment: One of the best decisions I ever made in my life was to basically just start actively avoiding most news. If anything is really going to ultimately affect me I'll hear about it from the people around me and the other 98% that just doesn't matter will just float on by with me never even having known about it Life's a lot happier when you're not constantly having every little wrong doing in the world shoved down your throat
For what reason does anyone watch the news? Like, why do you care what is going on at other places? What’s the big deal?

Like reading/watching the news?
Main Post:
Like you can tolerate it, and you see its value
Top Comment: "Like" as in enjoying it? No, not really. "Like" as in seeing value in it and considering it my duty as a citizen to keep up to date on current events? Yes. Though the more the 24/7 news cycle geared towards maximizing clicks and outrage becomes the de facto standard of consuming news, the more I enjoy kicking it back with a weekly news magazine (Atlantic, Economist, Spiegel, New Statesman). It almost feels like a "news vacation" while actually diving deeper into current events than the meager "BREAKING NEWS" articles allow for.
